“Candle” is the song’s title, not the poem’s: Tarkovsky left it untitled, and it goes by its first line, “Sight grows dim — my strength.” He wrote it in 1977; it was printed in his _Izbrannoye_ (“Selected poems”) of 1982, and again in _Ot yunosti do starosti_ (“From youth to old age,” 1987).

When I finished this song, I thought it was the summit of my work, and I couldn’t wait to hear what Dad made of it. Alas, he didn’t take to it. He remembered the poem from _Nostalgia_, where the main character recites it, and felt it entirely differently. Or perhaps he just didn’t want to accept his own fading with such anguish.

<!-- voice: growl -->

Два незримых алмазных копья;
И дыхания отчего дома;
Как на пашне седые волы;

<!-- voice: softer growl -->

My sight is dimming — my strength,
Two unseen diamond spears;
My hearing is going deaf, full of old thunder
And of the breath of my father’s house;
The knots of hard muscle have slackened
Like grey oxen on the ploughland;
And no longer do they shine at night,
The two [wings][^wings-en] at my back.

I am a candle, I burnt out at the feast.
Gather up my wax in the morning,
And this page will tell you
How to weep and what to be proud of,
How to give away the last third
Of merriment and die lightly,
And under the shelter of a chance roof
To catch fire after death, like a word.[^word-en]

[^wings-en]: For Tarkovsky these wings may have nothing to do with a butterfly, but on the album they connect: three songs earlier the wings belonged to the [“Butterfly in the Hospital Garden,”](./butterfly-rock.md) and here they go dark on the poet himself.

[^word-en]: Dad died in a city hospital, waiting for surgery, with none of us beside him. Whether he caught fire after death we will never know. Perhaps [“The River. Part Two”](./river-part-two.md) is the answer, where he spreads his wings, races over the years in a butterfly stroke, and becomes the drop, and the rain, and the river himself.
