<!-- For Vova to check: Project is a guess: it is your father's last song, posted on the «Владимир Захаров. Жизнь и творчество» channel, like the other Полуживые songs of his. The Russian glosses on the Chinese bridge (Wang Wei's «送别») are mine, not his. -->

“And he left, unasked about anything, into the clouds — endless, eternal”

In the last year and a half of his life, Dad — inspired by a gifted (and well-worn) copy of a book on classical Chinese poetry — suddenly took up Chinese.

He took it up, as he did everything in his life, with abandon — learning characters, trying to read without a translation (mostly the labels on Chinese cosmetics and toys 🙈), and, of course, writing songs.

I think this is the very last song he wrote, with a fitting title — I don’t know whether by chance or whether he “arranged” it that way on purpose.

The song came out strange both in the original (which I’m also attaching in the comments) and in the “reworking.”

I suppose that’s how it had to be.

<!-- lyrics:ru -->

My friend, get down from your horse,
My friend, let us drink wine
From jade cups.

My friend, I have but one question for you:
Where does your road lead, my lord,
Where does your road lead?

And he answered: my dreams did not come true,
I longed to fall asleep among the southern mountains.
And he left, unasked about anything,
Into the clouds, endless, eternal.

[^wangwei-en]

Yes, he answered: my dreams did not come true,
I longed to fall asleep among the southern mountains.
And he left, unasked about anything,
Into the clouds, endless, eternal,
Into the clouds, endless, eternal,
Endless, eternal.

[^wangwei-en]: Chinese, Wang Wei, “Farewell”: _Xià mǎ yǐn jūn jiǔ, wèn jūn hé suǒ zhī? Jūn yán bù dé yì, guī wò Nán Shān chuí. Dàn qù mò fù wèn, bái yún wú jìn shí._ — “Get down from your horse, drink my wine; I ask you: where are you headed? You say your hopes came to nothing; you will go home and lie down at the foot of the Southern Mountains. Go, then, I will ask no more; the white clouds have no end.”
