<!-- For Vova to check: the words file titles this track “In Your Image” in the list and “In Your Own Image” above its words; the file keeps “In Our Image”, as the master is named — which is it? -->

The deity is a thought roaming the endless night, and a thought has no form. To
see what it is, it needs a mirror. So it makes man in its own image and
likeness, and looks: in man’s laughter and tears it finds itself, and in man’s
dreams, the shape it takes. Man looks back, and gives it a name — God — and a
face like his own; from then on, God is a he. Before long, who is whose image,
he can no longer say.

The title plays on who makes whom in whose image. “In our image” is God speaking
of himself as “us” — “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness” (Genesis 1\:26, KJV) — and it is people making God in theirs: “If God
created us in his own image, we have more than reciprocated,” in the line
attributed to Voltaire. Xenophanes said it first: if horses had hands, they
would draw their gods as horses.

This was one of the last songs I wrote for the album. I wanted an operatic song,
and that’s where the Italian came from. Scusate se non è proprio italiano.

«In our image» — это и

Scusate se non è proprio italiano.

A thought, unchained, roams the endless night,
Contemplating form in the absence of sight.
“An image,” it muses, “to mirror my might,
But what is my essence, unveiled in the light?”

What is essence at all without the form that it takes,
A shadow without substance, a dream that never wakes?
A question without answer, a path that never ends,
In the heart of my creation, this puzzle I send.

[^tua-en]: Italian: “In your image, reflections I see, / From human dreams, the form I take. / In your creed, my path. / In the painting, the painter, a divine circle.” Cf. Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image” (KJV).

Reflections stir in the depths of their eyes,
A world of emotions under the skies.
“Such chaos and beauty entwined in their fate,
Is this mirror of mine a gift or a weight?”

In their laughter and tears my image is cast,
A spectrum of love in shadows so vast.
“Through triumphs and trials they seek to find,
A reflection of mine — a reflection divine.

Nella tua immagine, riflessi vedo,
Dai sogni umani, la forma che prendo.
Nel tuo credo, il mio cammino.
Nel quadro, il pittore, un cerchio divino

[Alla nostra immagine][^nostra-en], riflessi vedo,
Dai sogni umani, la forma che prendo.
Nel tuo credo, il mio cammino.
Nel quadro, il pittore, un cerchio divino

[^nostra-en]: Italian: “In our image,” as in Genesis 1:26: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (KJV).
