<!-- For Vova to check: Project is a guess: it is your father's song to Pasternak, posted on the «Владимир Захаров. Жизнь и творчество» channel, like the other Полуживые songs of his. A different song from `sneg_0` («Снег»): different words and a different master. -->

“For life does not wait; before you look back, it’s Christmastide”

They say Dad used to sing me this song when I was still in my mother’s belly. Maybe that’s why I wanted to give it this somewhat lulling arrangement now.

For all its apparent simplicity, the harmonies here, as in Dad’s best songs, are “alive”: chord changes you barely notice settle on the ledges of Pasternak’s verse like snow on the steps of a back staircase.

Sadly, snow isn’t planning to fall in our parts yet — but who knows, maybe this song will bring it a little closer.

<!-- lyrics:en -->

Snow is falling, snow is falling.
Toward the little white stars in the blizzard
The geranium flowers reach
Past the window frame.

Snow is falling, and all is in turmoil,
All of it takes flight, —
The steps of the back stairs,
The turn at the crossroads.

Snow is falling, snow is falling,
As if it’s not flakes that are falling,
But in a patched old cloak
The firmament is coming down to earth.

As if, with the air of an oddball,
From the top landing of the stairs,
Stealing along, playing hide-and-seek,
The sky is coming down from the attic.

Because life does not wait.
Before you look back — it’s Yuletide.
Only a short interval,
You look — and here’s the New Year.

Snow is falling, thick, so thick.
[In step with it][^idet-en], with those same feet,
At the same pace, with that same laziness
Or with that same swiftness,

Perhaps time is passing?
Perhaps year after year
Follows the way the snow falls,
Or like the words in a poem?

Snow is falling, snow is falling,
Snow is falling, and all is in turmoil:
The whitened passer-by,
The astonished plants,
The turn at the crossroads.

[^idet-en]: In Russian snow doesn’t fall, it “goes” (идёт) — the same verb as walking, and time “passes” the same way.
