<!-- For Vova to check: Project is a guess: track 5 of the unnamed `grebaniy-bal` album, posted with it to the Грёбаный бал Telegram channel on 2025-11-07; the album has no title yet, so the song is a single. Master is the checklist's `Окна.flac`, byte for byte the size of the album's `05 Окна.flac`; the repo also has `okna.flac`, a 4:53 render against the master's 4:46. -->

Часть третья»](/music/songs/river-part-three/ru).

That dream again: I’m standing on the waste ground behind the building,
Underfoot the weeds and the thistles are carving up the turf,
And over by number four the lads are surely kicking a ball around at keep-away,
And it seems you only have to reach out a hand to them and you’ll be straight back there.
Back where you can study the faces of passers-by and not seem strange,
Where the worst thing that can happen is being called home too early,
Where in the mornings the grove waves at the windows with aspens not yet cut down,
Where Dad is the biggest and strongest, and Mom is the most beautiful.

I wake up, a stifled groan, a lump in my throat, someone else’s house,
Someone else’s wall, someone else’s country, someone else’s war, and however far down you look, there’s no bottom in sight.
The world is like a string tuned half an octave too high,
Half-crazed, it sprays spit and breathes half-life, but no one will hear these fears.
Because it’s part of fucking growing up: teeth clenched, forcing your way through the thorns,
Making decisions with a knowing look, convincing yourself they’re the right ones.
But I’m not asking heaven for salvation, only a breather in this flight,
So that, while there’s still an hour till dawn, I can go back to that faraway summer.

If I could pass, even just at the edge,
Those windows where my youth shines
Like a fading ember,
Keeping this fire in my heart.

Everyone copes however they can: some argue, some quarrel,
Some ask the Lord for strength, some just howl out loud,
Some will jump down rabbit holes, some will go quiet but won’t hide,
Some head off into the fields on a fast train, to vanish all alone.
And me, I hide in the windows of the past, [like Coleridge in the waters of the Otter][^otter-en],
As if searching for something so dear and carefree,
With glints, with reflections, with unsteady outlines
Bringing back those moments outside space and time.

[^otter-en]: In Coleridge’s sonnet [“To the River Otter”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_the_River_Otter), the stream of his Devon childhood brings back everything he saw in it as a boy, and he ends: “Ah! that once more I were a careless Child!” Cf. [The River. Part Three](/music/songs/river-part-three).

If I could pass, even just at the edge,
Those windows where my youth shines
Like a fading ember,
But that’s all I have.

If I could pass, even just at the edge,
Those windows where my youth shines
Like a fading ember,
But that’s all I have: these
Distant, close
Windows of mine, daydreams of mine.
If I could see them once more
And not forget.
