Ptitsy

Birds

“The song of a departing soul,” per my dad (RIP).

Russian4:47

I remember writing it at night on the sofa in the living room. While I was writing it, it seemed brilliant; once I’d finished, already somewhat drawn-out and dull. Dad’s comment: “A sad song, this one. What keeps going round in my head is ‘the song of a departing soul.’”

Lyrics

The translation is a crib, not a singing version.

Ptitsy, kuda vy letite?
Chto vy uznatʼ tam khotite?
Mozhet bytʼ, tam, za kholmami,
Kto-to schastliv bytʼ s vami
V novy denʼ, v novy kray,
Bolʼ moya, uletay
Ni o chom ne zhaley,
V svoi krylʼya poverʼ
x3
x3
V novy denʼ, v novy svet,
Tam, gde zla i gorya net
Zdesʼ, vnizu, na zemle
Mesta netu tebe,
V novy denʼ
Birds, where are you flying?
What is it you want to find out there?
Maybe there, beyond the hills,
Someone is happy to be with you
Into a new day, into a new land,
My pain, fly away
Regret nothing,
Believe in your wings
x3
Into a new day, into a new light,
There, where there is no evil and no grief
Here, below, on the earth
There’s no room for you,
Into a new day
