Snow Is Falling
The whitened passer-by, the astonished plants, the turn at the crossroads.
“For life does not wait; before you look back, it’s Christmastide”
They say Dad used to sing me this song when I was still in my mother’s belly. Maybe that’s why I wanted to give it this somewhat lulling arrangement now.
For all its apparent simplicity, the harmonies here, as in Dad’s best songs, are “alive”: chord changes you barely notice settle on the ledges of Pasternak’s verse like snow on the steps of a back staircase.
Sadly, snow isn’t planning to fall in our parts yet — but who knows, maybe this song will bring it a little closer.
The translation is a crib, not a singing version.
