Do not torment yourself…

My soul is with you, in my verse.

Russian3:57

“Let the base dust rot away in the earth — my soul is with you, in my verse.”

Dad recorded this sonnet (No. 74, in Kushner’s translation) with Uncle Volodya — “the Hat” — in 2006, when the two of them briefly decided to “reunite” the band Sinedrion in, so to speak, a stripped-down lineup of two.

If Uncle Volodya allows it, I’ll post the original; for now — a reworking with a female and slightly Armenian soul :)

Lyrics

The English is Shakespeare’s original, Sonnet 74; the song sings Kushner’s translation.

Ty ne terzaysya i kogda za mnoy
Pridut, chtob vzyatʼ bez lishney kaniteli,
Pustʼ eti stroki sokhranyat zhivoy
Tu pamyatʼ, chto u nas otnyatʼ khoteli.
I yesli vmeste bytʼ nam ne dano,
Moy vysshiy dukh otyshcheshʼ za strokoyu
Zemlya vozʼmyot, chto yey obrecheno,
Moya dusha ostanetsya s toboyu.
I potomu lishʼ musor bytiya,
Chervey dobychu, zhalkiy plod razboya
Utratishʼ ty, kogda pogibnu ya, -
Prostuyu plotʼ, chto pamyati ne stoit.
Puskay — v zemle istleyet nizkiy prakh
Moya — dusha s toboy, v moikh stikhakh.
Da potomu lishʼ musor bytiya,
Chervey dobychu, zhalkiy plod razboya
Utratishʼ ty, kogda pogibnu ya, -
Prostuyu plotʼ, chto pamyati ne stoit.
Puskay — v zemle istleyet nizkiy prakh
Moya dusha — s toboy,
V moikh stikhakh.
But be contented: when that fell arrest
Without all bail shall carry me away,
My life hath in this line some interest,
Which for memorial still with thee shall stay.
When thou reviewest this, thou dost review
The very part was consecrate to thee:
The earth can have but earth, which is his due;
My spirit is thine, the better part of me:
So then thou hast but lost the dregs of life,
The prey of worms, my body being dead;
The coward conquest of a wretch’s knife,
Too base of thee to be remembered.
The worth of that is that which it contains,
And that is this, and this with thee remains.
So then thou hast but lost the dregs of life,
The prey of worms, my body being dead;
The coward conquest of a wretch’s knife,
Too base of thee to be remembered.
The worth of that is that which it contains,
And that is this, and this with thee remains.
