I was seven or eight when I “made up” my first “song.” D minor, A major, G minor, A major — the simplest harmony there is, and it would have sunk without trace if my father hadn’t heard me plinking away at the piano just then.

He came running over and started playing it back, already with a melody on top — insisting, of course, that I had written it. In whatever he was feeling at that moment, I suppose that was true.

That’s how our first “collab” came about. It occurs to me now — strangely, there weren’t many of those. We both wrote a lot, but somehow mostly apart. The souls synced up later, when the two guitars came out.

Either way: now, thirty-three years after it started and twenty months after my father’s death, that first thing we made together has finally taken shape as a song.

Sneg za oknom
On ne znal, chto aprelʼ
Shol vopreki
Ne khotel bytʼ dozhdyom
Zdravstvuy, papa; znayeshʼ, ya skuchayu
Po nashim posidelkam v dve gitary
Ya na akusticheskom basu
Ty — na svoyey muzime staroy
Skuchayu po tvoyemu zapakhu
Takomu pryanomu, uyutnomu
I kak ty govoril, chto mog ya pomestitʼsya
V ogromnom karmane tvoyey kurtki
Ty znayeshʼ, ya skuchayu dazhe
Po melocham chto razdrazhali
Po tvoyey trevozhnosti i nevozmozhnosti
Skazatʼ, chto ranit, chtob ne ranitʼ
No znayeshʼ, bolʼshe vsekh vospominaniy,
Nedoponimaniy i nedoskazaniy
Ya skuchayu po tomu sebe
Chto viden byl tvoimi lishʼ glazami
Ty znayeshʼ, ya pochti ne plakal
Za dvadtsatʼ mesyatsev raz pyatʼ i vyshlo
Lishʼ po vecheram zakryvshisʼ v vannoy
Vyl tikho, tak chtoby nikto ne slyshal
A vchera boltal v krovati s synom
I prorvalo, da tak, chto ne zatknyoshʼ
To li prosto nakopilosʼ
To li na tebya on tak pokhozh
Rasskazyval pro vsyo na svete
Pro dobrotu, da i pro kurtku tozhe
Pro oshchushcheniye, chto kto-to yestʼ
Kto lyubit potomu chto ne lyubitʼ ne mozhet
Smotryu, a u nego glaza na mokrom
I goloskom, ot koma v gorle szhatym
«Ведь ты его знал так много
«Vedʼ ty yego znal tak mnogo
Tak pochemu ty placheshʼ, papa?»
Sneg za oknom
On ne znal, chto aprelʼ
Shol vopreki
Peresokhshey slezoy
No ya veryu chto snova
Nastupit tot denʼ
Gde my spoyom
V dve gitary s toboy
Snow outside the window
It didn’t know it was April
It fell against all reason
It didn’t want to be rain
Hello, dad; you know, I miss
Our sitting up together on two guitars
Me on the acoustic bass
You on your old
I miss the smell of you
That spiced, comfortable smell
And how you used to say that I could fit
Inside the enormous pocket of your jacket
You know, I even miss
The small things that used to irritate me
Your anxiousness, and how I never could
Tell you what hurts, so as not to hurt you
But you know, more than all the memories,
The misunderstandings and the things left unsaid
I miss the version of myself
That only your eyes ever saw
You know, I have hardly cried at all
Five times in twenty months, if that
Only in the evenings, shut in the bathroom
Howling quietly, so nobody would hear
And yesterday I was talking in bed with my son
And it broke, and broke so hard there was no stopping it
Either it had just been piling up
Or he simply looks that much like you
I told him about everything
About kindness, and about the jacket too
About the feeling that someone is there
Who loves you because not loving is beyond him
I look — and his eyes have gone wet
And in a small voice, squeezed by the lump in his throat:
“But you knew him for so long.
So why are you the one crying, dad?”
Snow outside the window
It didn’t know it was April
It fell against all reason
Like a tear run dry
But I believe that day
Will come round again
When we’ll sing
On two guitars, you and I
