300,000 Years

Thank you for 300,000 years. Now it ends.

English3:45

The fury has burned itself out; the last hints have been dropped. What comes after is acceptance. God understands that the story is over, and he lets go — not in the sense that he will let people live. He accepts that he is about to destroy them. And still he is grateful to them, for the three hundred thousand years they had together under the sun.

Behind the scenes

Along with “In Our Image,”“In Our Image,” this was one of the last songs I wrote for the album: the last piece of the puzzle.

At the very end there is the sound of a door opening and then slamming shut, and right after it comes the first deathcore chord of “Grand Finale.”“Grand Finale.” The AI made that door on its own; I never asked for it.

Lyrics

Remember the days, in Eden’s grace,
A paradise lost, without a trace.
I watched you grow, I watched you strive,
In your brief dance, so alive.
From whispered myths, to the tales we spun,
In every battle lost and won.
We had a good, good run, Three hundred thousand years in the sun.
Years of love, years of strife,
And all the beauty that we shared in life.
Miracles seen, in the blink of an eye,
And now it’s time to say goodbye.
A fleeting shadow that’s now done,
Three hundred thousand years in the sun.
In your quest to touch the sky,
You learned the how, forgot the why.
So here we stand, at the end of days,
A final bow, as the curtain sways.
A last goodbye, before the night,
To every wrong, to every right.
A parting kiss, to the dream we knew,
In the silence, I’ll remember.
We had a good, good run,
Three hundred thousand years in the sun.
Miracles seen, in the blink of an eye,
And now it’s time to say goodbye.
Just to think how fast they’ve gone,
Three hundred thousand years
Under the sun.
