Tarkovsky wrote “Butterfly in the Hospital Garden” in 1945. In December 1943, near Gorodok in the Vitebsk region, an explosive bullet hit him in the leg, and at the field hospital gas gangrene set in. His wife, Antonina Bokhonova, got a pass into the front-line zone and brought him to Moscow, where at the Institute of Surgery Professor Vishnevsky performed his sixth amputation. “Gradually, step by step, poem by poem, the poet returns to life,” writes his daughter Marina: from “Polka” and “In Memory of Friends” to “Butterfly in the Hospital Garden” and “Star Catalogue.”

His first book, due out in 1946, never came out after that August’s Party resolution on the journals Zvezda and Leningrad, and “Butterfly” reached a book only in 1966, in Zemle — zemnoye (“To the earth, what is earthly”).

The song leaves out the ending, which is where China is explained: the poet begs the butterfly not to fly away — “Don’t, don’t go looking for China… Soul, what do you want with China?” Vladimir Kaev, in an essay on Proza.ru, sees in her a nurse in the hospital garden with something Eastern in her face, and the soul — “a flicker of colour and line. A drawing of chance and love.”

The translation is a crib, not a singing version.

Iz teni v svet pereletaya,
Ona sama i tenʼ i svet,
Gde rodilasʼ ona takaya,
Pochti lishonnaya primet?
Ona letayet, prisedaya,
Ona, dolzhno bytʼ, iz Kitaya,
Zdesʼ na neyo pokhozhikh net,
Ona iz tekh zabytykh let,
Gde kaplya malaya lazori
Kak more sineye vo vzore.
Gde rodilasʼ ona takaya,
Pochti lishonnaya primet?
Iz teni v svet pereletaya,
Ona sama i tenʼ i svet,
Ona sama i tenʼ i svet.
Ona yedva do dvukh schitayet,
Ne ponimayet nichego,
Iz tseloy azbuki chitayet
Dve glasnykh bukvy — A i O.
Ona klyanyotsya: navsegda! —
Ne derzhit slova nikogda.
Gde rodilasʼ ona takaya,
Pochti lishonnaya primet?
Iz teni v svet pereletaya,
Ona sama i tenʼ i svet.
I dlya chego yey bytʼ v pokoye?
Ona kak zerkalʼtse prostoye.
Gde rodilasʼ ona takaya,
Pochti lishonnaya primet?
Iz teni v svet pereletaya,
Ona sama i tenʼ i svet.

Flitting into light from shadow,
She is herself both shadow and light,
Where was she born, such as she is,
Almost without a distinguishing mark?
She flies, dipping as she goes,
She must be ,
There is none like her here,
She is from those forgotten years
Where a small drop of azure
Is a blue sea to the eye.
Where was she born, such as she is,
Almost without a distinguishing mark?
Flitting into light from shadow,
She is herself both shadow and light,
She is herself both shadow and light.
She can barely count to two,
She understands nothing,
Out of the whole alphabet she reads
Two vowels — A and O.
She swears: forever! —
And never keeps her word.
Where was she born, such as she is,
Almost without a distinguishing mark?
Flitting into light from shadow,
She is herself both shadow and light.
And why should she be at rest?
She is like a plain little mirror.
Where was she born, such as she is,
Almost without a distinguishing mark?
Flitting into light from shadow,
She is herself both shadow and light.
