Insomnia

The lifeless and the half-alive.

Russian6:34

“Insomnia” was written in 1958. It is not in Tarkovsky’s first book, Pered snegom (“Before the snow,” 1962), and first reached a book in Zemle — zemnoye (“To the earth, what is earthly,” 1966). Tarkovsky sets the lines about the seconds and the half-alive as a staircase: “Send seconds / this way / and that…”

Behind the scenes

The band took its name from a word in this song.

Lyrics

The translation is a crib, not a singing version.

Mebelʼ treskayetsya po nocham.
Gde-to kaplet iz vodoprovoda.
Ot vsednevnogo gruza plecham
V etu poru dayotsya svoboda,
V etu poru dayutsya veshcham
Besslovesnye dushi lyudskiye,
I slepye, nemye, glukhiye
Razbredayutsya po etazham.
V etu poru chasy gorodskiye
Shlyut sekundy tuda i syuda,
I pletutsya khromye, krivye,
Podymayutsya v lifte zhivye,
Nezhivye i poluzhivye,
Zhdut v potyomkakh, gde kaplet voda,
Vynimayut iz sumok stakany
I priplyasyvayut, kak tsygany,
Za dveryami stoyat, kak beda,
Svyorla medlenno vkhodyat v zatvory
I seychas oborvut provoda.
No skoreye oni — kreditory
I prishli navsegda, navsegda,
I scheta prinesli. Nevozmozhno
Vodu v stupe, ne spavshi, tolochʼ,
Nevozmozhno zasnutʼ, — tak trevozhna
Dlya pokoya nam dannaya nochʼ.
The furniture cracks at night.
Somewhere the water mains drip.
From the everyday burden the shoulders
At this hour are given freedom,
At this hour things are given
,
And the blind, the mute, the deaf
Wander off across the floors.
At this hour the city clocks
Send seconds this way and that,
And the lame and the crooked trudge along,
The living ride up in the lift,
The lifeless and the half-alive
Wait in the dark where the water drips,
Take glasses out of their bags
And jig like Gypsies,
Stand behind doors like trouble,
Drills slowly enter the locks
And are about to cut the wires.
But more likely they are creditors
And have come for ever, for ever,
And brought the bills. It is impossible
To without sleep,
It is impossible to fall asleep — so uneasy
Is the night given us for rest.
